Can One Codebase Build Both Your iOS and Android App, and Does It Really Save Money?

Two native apps or one shared codebase (Flutter / React Native): the differences, where the savings come from, when not to do it, and when you may not need an app at all.

Short answer: yes. Most business apps, such as membership, loyalty points, booking or staff apps, can be built once in Flutter or React Native and shipped to both the App Store and Play Store. You save on the build and on long-term care, because one fix covers both platforms.

Two native apps versus one codebase

Team
Separate iOS / Android: Two (Swift + Kotlin)
One codebase: One
New feature
Separate iOS / Android: Built twice
One codebase: Built once
Look across platforms
Separate iOS / Android: May differ
One codebase: Identical
Hardware-heavy work
Separate iOS / Android: Best
One codebase: Possible; some cases need platform-specific add-ons
Long-term care
Separate iOS / Android: Higher
One codebase: Lower

Flutter or React Native?

Both are production-ready. Flutter suits apps that need identical design and animation on every device; React Native suits teams that already have a React website and want to share people or code. For a business owner, the choice matters less than whether the team has actually shipped apps to the stores and can support them afterwards.

When one codebase is the wrong choice

  • Apps that lean heavily on the camera, sensors or Bluetooth, such as AR or medical devices.
  • Games or graphics-heavy apps, which belong in a game engine.
  • Apps that must use new iOS or Android features on the day they ship.

Sometimes you do not need an app

If customers only use it occasionally, a good mobile website or a LINE OA with LIFF is often enough, and nobody has to download anything. Build an app when you need push notifications, QR scanning at the counter, or you expect frequent use.

One example of our work: a loyalty app that scans a QR code at the counter, adds points instantly, and notifies customers when a reward unlocks, built once for iPhone and Android.

FAQ

Is a shared-codebase app slower than native?

For typical business apps users will not notice. The gap shows in games and graphics-heavy work.

Do you handle App Store and Play Store submission?

Yes, both stores, plus TestFlight builds for your team to try before launch.

Should I build an app or just use LINE OA?

For occasional use, LINE OA with LIFF is often enough. For push, QR scanning or frequent use, build an app.
